Bomfunk MC's - Freestyler

Thanks to all those who felt they had to set the record straight when casting their votes (I'd put it on the site as "Bonfunk MCs"). Freestyler is a refreshing slice of techno-rap (if such a genre existed, just be glad I didn't throw jungle in too), mainly because it goes for high tempo but is not excessive on the kickin' 'aardcore-ness. Most likely candidate for "disappointing follow-up material" - last years winner being Len ("Steal My Sunshine").

At the start of 2000, it looked as if the bulk of indie would be heading further down the road of soulful whinging and melancholia that Travis has managed to perfect in 1999. Running against the grain were Matt Bellamy and co, who were more content to express their upset by keeping their spleens vented. What a debut this turned out to be, the slow delicate intro giving way to the avalanche of a chorus, Matt Bellamy thrashing his vocal chords to within an inch of their life, wailing guitars, and all from a three piece? Why, I'd almost forgotten what angst was......

Moloko - Pure Pleasure Seeker

From its contra bass sax intro (yes, ok, I read the inlay) to Roisin Murphy's final incessant exclamation of "Come make me whole ... body and soul" this song is unfeasibly funky, sassy and erm well just darn well sexy. Which is why everyone voted for it. So you might as well just admit it.

Death In Vegas - Aisha

What an evil, dark and thoroughly deleterious world Messrs Heller and Fearless have chosen to inhabit on this brooding monster. "Aisha!" bellows Iggy Pop, "I'm vibrating!" It's hardly bloody surprising is it, you grizzly old git, someone has turned the thumping bassline right up in the mix. Somehow though inspite of all this, probably through the use of the dark arts, it's an absolute belter. Sharper than a meat cleaver and harder than a concrete sandwich.

Daft Punk - One More Time

Not quite the return that some were expecting, this one went further down the road clearly labelled pop than the pairing have ever gone before. Still, the old vocoder vocals were still in perfect working order, and some of Thomas Bangalter's Stardust had evidently been left over from last summer to sprinkle between the grooves.

After what I consider to be a stuttering start with "Learn To Fly" (pause as I wait for the backlash), the Foo's replaced the unleaded with kerosene and took to the skies with Generator. From the Vocoder intro (which brings me out in a rash of Peter Frampton records every time I hear it), to the machine gun drumming, this was one of many good reasons to make an investment in the album.

Kylie - Spinning Around

Following on from a less than successful stint collaborating with the likes of James Dean Bradfield of the Manics, Kylie headed back to the dance vibe and gained instant success with Spinning Around. All of a sudden, she was back, big time. No beach club would be complete without Kylie strutting her diminuitive stuff on the stage, striking a saucy pose or two. And what look will she be sporting for this year???

Quite possibly the most successful boyband in the UK at the moment and, almost definitely, one of their better singles - well, I like it anyway! However, certain other people profess total ignorance on their part - I reckon it's just because they're too embarrassed to admit they love it really! ;-)

Back in the highly competitive world of teen pop, Britney shows that sticking to the same hugely successful formula is more often than not the key to success. Bearing more than a passing resemblance to "Hit Me Baby.....", she has the good manners to apologise for the cash-in. I'm tempted to place a bet at the bookies that the next Britney album will have "By Royal Appointment to William" stamped on the back of it.

Offspring - Original Prankster

Egg on the face time. The main point of me trying to give the voting public an aide-memoire was to effectively second guess the most likely entries on the Top 50. That way everyone can make their choice on a level playing field. So on the first day of voting, in this song came........D'oh! Whilst bands like the Bloodhound Gang ably assist in the Rock Takes The Piss genre, for my money The Offspring still do it better. Does conjure up amusing images thinking of teenagers going to one of their gigs and trying to be baritones at the key moment.
