Enrique Iglesias - Hero

Fill the bath, light the candles, get the bottle of wine and turn up the "sop" factor! Enrique manages, with consummate ease, to use the "Spanish Thing" to his advantage again. Aside from the rather depressing "Oops, been caught by the gangsters and I'll save my Moll" video, it's a song that does, though I'd hate to admit it, touch on the ideal of what people can expect or hope the perfect relationship to be. Definitely a song that wouldn't be too far out of place for a proposal.

My, what a year Alecia Moore has had. So, to round the year off, it was time to let the skeletons out the closet, with this touching ballad about the breakdown of family life. This must have cut quite deep, but despite her relatively tender years, it's written from the perspective of a girl a whole lot younger - and maybe its this which makes it all the more poignant.

Ms Dynamite - Di-Na-Mi-Tee

Imagine the scene. The judges room of the 2002 Mercury Music prize. The chair of the panel is pacing back and forth, rubbing his temples. "Look, we can't give the prize to The Streets this year. There's got to be something else that will put our credibility as pushing the cutting edge firmly back on the map." Silence descends in the room, just as a performer from downstairs can be heard delivering a seductive blend of hip-hop and poetic rapping; "I'm just Miss Di-Na-Mi-Tee-Heeeee". And they all lived happily ever after.

Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles

Now who can resist humming along to the opening bars of piano of this song? She'll go twice as far as the Proclaimers to prove her love, just as long as she can cadge a lift for her and her piano. One of a flood of North American pop poppets to hit the charts in 2002, Vanessa Carlton has the catchiest song and if you watch MTV, the chances are you'll have seen this video a million times already. If an Andrex puppy could sing, this is how it would sound.

Daniel Bedingfield - If You're Not The One

And you thought he'd managed to Get Through This. Moving from a garage song to a plaintive ballad is a pretty radical swing from your roots, but Daniel Bedingfield does it without batting an eyelid. Think the record company struggled with this shift a bit more, and was looking for something extra to showcase this more sensitive side. This might explain the video then - writing on pieces of glass - ah, he's got a Beautiful Mind, I see....... Still, the soaring vocal performances should see some amusing shambolic karaoke attempts coming soon to a local pub.

Blue featuring Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word

Blue's 3rd number 1 of the year was definitely a more slushy effort compared to the two previous numbers. But whilst sorry can indeed be the hardest word, it's not quite so harsh with the legend of 'hair' Elton John on keys. It wasn't the best song they released all year, but Duncan did look pretty fine in the video, so that's OK with me!

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Spread Your Love

Noel Gallagher may not have anywhere near the amount of kudos that he used to have, but his support of BRMC has probably still assisted with their success this year, judging from the legions of fans who saw them support Oasis in Finsbury Park. After the relatively sedate "Love Burns", this song is an honest-to-goodness stomping anthem, from the moment the hugely distorted bassline kicks in, to the final cymbal crash. Certainly provided rockers with something to work out to - try saying that about an Oasis song this year.

Puretone - Addicted To Bass

In a year where a lot of dance recycled tired lyrics, Addicted to Bass managed to breath new life into the breakbeat. Behind the heady beats is a solid pop lyric that just wouldn't work if the final mix had wimped out with something softer on the ear. Heavily roadtested in Australia before getting to our shores the song has a suitably Mad Max inspired video to go with it too. I'm not sure what a bank robbery, police chase and smashing through a caravan has to do with getting your fix of low frequency rumbles but I'd highly recommend blasting it out of a car or any other vehicle you've got handy.

Big Brovaz - Nu Flow

Okay, so they can't spell, but hey this is the hip and happening music scene and Big Brovaz was one of the best new acts to appear on said scene in 2002, especially as they've taken a big risk in having the same number of boys and girls in the group! I have absolutely no idea what they're harping on about in the song, but I thought it was very cool and I can't help but attempt to sing along badly to it (and, inevitably, get the words wrong!). A group to watch in 2003!

Elvis featuring Junkie XL - A Little Less Conversation

After 25 years of being tied for the most number one singles, the King has finally regained his throne with a cracking remix from Junkie XL. The fact that it cost an absolute fortune to be able to use the master tapes must keep Lisa Marie happy too, but at least the return investment is a song with brings Elvis into the modern age - something the Beatles tried and failed to do.
