X-Press 2 featuring David Byrne - Lazy
Lazy....maybe I was for voting for this one. It's the ultimate hangover of a song; it's served everywhere, you've drunk gallons of the stuff, the words soundtracked your night, you left, fell over, slept in the ditch, but it still keeps pounding away...you wake up and regret ever letting your mind mull over it's slacker beat and
shoulder-padded insistence. And like all intoxicants, you reach for another one for the following evening. 'I'm lazy when I'm lovin', I'm lazy when I play'....aaaaah, David please go away!

Ms Dynamite - It Takes More
Artist link:48
2002 was quite a year for Niomi McLean-Daley a.k.a. Ms Dynamite; winner of the Mercury Music prize for best album, three MOBOs, TOTP best RnB act - she also found time to conceive a little Miss Dynamite with a little help from her bodyguard. With this her second hit single, she turned her impressive lyrical skill to the rap world, US style - fast cars, fast women and erm ...Rolexes. And to be honest she doesn’t sound that impressed with it all – It Takes More, apparently. File under rap-pop crossover.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Zephyr Song
Artist link:4 11 15 34
For a band who have been kicking around for almost 20 years, it's pretty impressive that only in the latter half have they managed to reach their critical peak. A mellower cut than the "By The Way", this gently rolls along like the warm gust of wind it is named after. It's quite a long way from the sock wearing antics of old, but you never quite know what's up their sleeves.....

Death In Vegas featuring Liam Gallagher - Scorpio Rising
It takes quite a lot of nerve to mastermind a song that has an Oasis band member on the one hand and a Status Quo riff on the other, but Death In Vegas seem to thrive on musical tightrope walking. Clearly Liam Gallagher has been dying for a chance to swagger all over a song again, and spotting a clear chance to do a John Lennon on "Tomorrow Never Knows", the trademark whi-eeeeeyieeeeeeyieeeeyieeeeine is back with a vengeance. Flower power with a hard bastard twist.

Darius - Colourblind
Who could believe the sight of Darius returning to face the judges once again in Pop Idol? Like a phoenix from the flames he recovered from the shame of extremely dodgy facial hair and Britney to come third. However, there were more surprises later in the year when he released his first single. Rather than go for a Westlife B side or an insipid cover (Gareth, take note) his effort was self penned with clever lyrics and a catchy chorus. Along with Liberty X this year Darius proved that every loser wins.

Queens Of The Stone Age - No One Knows
Artist link:43
I'd heard no QotSA stuff until MTV2 started pumping it into my living room on an hourly basis. Bought the album now, haven't I? Once again, killer riffs and an overall depth of sound lure me into the trap. And as Kyle Gas from Tenacious D might say, Dave ****in' Grohl on drums helps too.

Aqualung - Strange And Beautiful
Does the name Matt Hales mean anything to you? Probably not. He was responsible for a (sadly underrated) indie band in the mid-'90s going by the (sadly naff) name of Ruth. Shame, their brief life turned out some cracking pop tunes. Some years later, he's managed to come up with a better monicker and his songwriting hasn't been tarnished by a few years away either. This debut offering gave us one of the best haunting ballads of the year: sole voice, percussion by metronome, deluded romantic lyrics - really the thing for relaunching a 21st century incarnation of a popular car?

Pink - Just Like A Pill
Artist link:16 18 39 49
The third hit from the best selling female solo artist of last year, "Just Like A Pill" is less of a raucous pop anthem than "Get The Party Started", but also unlikely to irritate in the long run. Hence the no-show from the latter I guess. It's pop that worms its way into whatever part of your brain that stores songs you hum to and barracades itself in. Keep takin' the tablets luv, the hair will return to normal after 3 days.

Eminem - Without Me
Artist link:2 8 30 48
'2 Trailer Park Girls go round the outside, round the outside'.....I bet you sing along to that, along with everyone else. It might have the same sentiment that alot of his songs have, but when the whole world sings your song and agrees with that sentiment, you must have done something right! This song is funky, it's really witty and is great for bouncing in your car. The world would be, well maybe not empty, but certainly more boring, without Eminem. We need his arrogance and his ambition and drive to seek music glory. He can sing, he can write, he might say some weird stuff, but thank God he's not Gareth Gates.
