Top 50 of 2004

Here it is then....

Sorry for the delay, lots of potential excuses to offer, but the main thing is it is here now - the results for the poll of the top 50 singles of 2004. Thanks very much to all that cast their votes, we have done well. I'm pleased to report that we have bettered the total from last year - and by quite some amount. The total stood at 148 votes in the end - which means nearly 1500 individual votes for the songs in the shortlist.

How was the list compiled?

The results were sorted out as follows. Your votes were submitted into a database, containing all the songs. I then simply got the database to tot up the totals and compile the chart. The scoring system remains the same as previous years, the old tried and trusted "10 points for a number 1 vote, down to 1 point for a number 10 vote" system. Because the chart itself is compiled by sorting the list of songs by the following criteria (in order of importance, the subsequent criteria used if there was a tie):

Errata!

Did I ever say that sometimes cock-ups do happen? Well, I've spotted one myself. Any song that was released in consecutive years can cause some headaches, and this happened to no further than five, yes five candidates. To four of them, it's boosted their position a bit (they were: "Goldfrapp - Strict Machine", "Blink 182 - Feeling This", "Razorlight - Rip It Up" and "Basement Jaxx - Good Luck"). But it wasn't enough to get them into the Top 50. For one song though, it wasn't just the occasional vote or two, it more than doubled its total, and as a result it goes thundering into the Top 50 at number 26. So, the consequence of this is that the song that was number 50 gets the elbow - so sorry Beastie Boys, much as I love you, you're outta here.

With any luck, that's the last of it - but if you spot any further howlers, let me know.

Okay, batten down the hatches, here we go then.....

The Spotify playlist

So, I've sorted it, and here it is. And, hopefully by the time you see it, it's all there (with only 1 live version since the only other way is to have the whole double A included). Should you find less than 50, drop me a mail and I'll try and get it back up to the full complement.
