U2 - Electrical Storm
Artist link:7 20 22 28
Okay, so they are probably heading into a hibernation period now until the next album, but as probably their final single release for a while they've done it again. With William Orbit behind the desk, the song is an ingenious blend of subtle verses and blazing choruses, Orbit's trademark synths adding the all the necessary atmosphere. Let's hope it's not another 3 year wait in the musical wilderness.

Oakenfold - Starry Eyed Surprise
Want something different, fun and extremely catchy? Then try this one for size. It stuck in my head for days on end. In fact, I defy you to dislike this record - and believe me, I tried hard after finding out it was that goon Shifty Shellshock from Crazy Town on vocals. As equally at home played on your boom box on the beach or spun in a club - this was THE feelgood hit of the summer.

Darren Hayes - Insatiable
Alas, Savage Garden is no more. However, if there's one thing that was striking about the band it was the vocal talents of Darren Hayes and, with the release of his debut solo album, "Insatiable" is a track that demonstrates the range and definition of such a voice with impeccable quality. It's a soulful track that fuses many of the artists self-proclaimed influences and it is quite easily an excellent example of musical talent. Lyrically, it appears to grasp the necessity to jump into bed as soon as you've made it through the door with your new bit of stuff!

Nelly - Hot In Herre
I thought I didn't know this one, until watching Nevermind The Buzzcocks rapidly drew my attention back to this song and then it all became clear how this got in. I'm afraid I'm lousy when it comes to trying to classify this type of song (R&B, right?), but even I can appreciate the musical charms of this song - lyrically he might as well be singing the pools results.

Badly Drawn Boy - Something To Talk About
Artist link:19
It's hard to divorce this song from the visual images of Hugh Grant apologetically blustering his way through lines like "yes, I really am that shallow", but even if you don't get to see "About A Boy", you can't fail to hum along to this song. Damon Gough may look shambolic, but as far as songwriting talents go, he's a pedigree. He's taken a leaf out of the Ian Broudie school of producing, sure, but somehow in spite of its twee-ness, it will still warm the cockles of your heart. Clever idea to package up the book, the album and the film together - a Bridget Jones for the other half of the population.

Tenacious D - Tribute
Back in the 1980s, there was a song called "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", a rockabilly country number about a man who dared to duel with the devil on the fiddle and won. Nearly twenty years on, along come Tenacious D, who provide us with a mock rock ballad about a demon who forces our heros to play the greatest song in the world on pain of death. It really should be a cheap gag, but it's dry and wry humour (no surprise to learn the vocalist is a certain Jack Black) and swipes at the rock stylee don't fail to impress. Needless to say, they win.

Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love
Artist link:45
In 1981, ‘Tainted Love’ was successfully covered by Soft Cell and given a new wave make-over, now two decades later (has it really been that long?) its been resurrected by the Antichrist Superstar himself. In contrast to Soft Cell’s minimalist synthesiser workout, Manson has goth’d up ‘Tainted Love’ for the 21st century kids, topping it off with his vocal cord mangling snarl. In all fairness, attempting a cover of a well-known song is always a tricky thing to pull off, however, in Manson’s case he does it with style yet still retains the identity of the song. Goth Thing indeed.

The Strokes - Someday
Artist link:3 33 49
The love affair continues. 2002 was a bit of a gap year for the Strokes, but whilst they decided what to do with their career plan, this was released to rake in the cash one more time from their album. By now, the sound had become a trademark in its own right, the jangly guitar fused with the slightly distorted vocals of Julian Casablancas, all distilled into a 3 minute single. They made it sound so damn easy too.

The Streets - Don't Mug Yourself
Artist link:8 42
Hands up who likes folk music. No. I thought not. But that's because its relevance to our lives has diminished - some bloke who's allergic to haircuts banging on about Enclosure is a couple of hundred years too late. However, this song tells a story that IS potentially relevant to us all. And it does it with a sense of humour and a sing along chorus. Say the words to your best mate today, they'll thank you for it. Good video too, well done lads. Have a light ale.

Missy Elliott - Work It
Okay, I have to admit that it was the video that sold this song to me, but take away the video evidence and "Work It" is found guilty without question m’lud of being a damn fine tune. Stamped with Missy’s ample hip hop credentials, it is a heady mix of beats, samples and saucy lyrics to get in a sweat about. Who else could carry off a line like: "Take my thong off and my ass go boom"? This is definitely girl power Missy style - in your face in more ways than one.
