Top 50 Singles of 2002

The last words

Commentary on the results

So far, in the previous incarnations of this site, I've been able to look at the results and say "yeah, that's pretty much what I'd expect". Not this year though. To my mind, I thought there would be 2 songs that would be pitched in a battle for the top slot - Elvis / Junkie XL against the Sugababes. The Sugababes managed a bit of a late surge in the end to get to number 3, but Elvis? Well, number 41 was hardly what I expected given the impressive feat of being THE World Cup football song and giving The King his first new number 1 in 25 years. One thing that me and some of the shortlist panel did think was that there was no runaway dead cert song this year - and looking at the results, that much appears to have held true. The breadth of songs voted for has once again increased, 220 of the blighters this year, probably a testament to the size of our initial list and the increase in voting turnout this year. Now I didn't think 2002 was as good as 2001, but hey, why not take a measured view and go back to the question on the voting form:

Musically, was 2002 better than 2001?

Yes: 62%

No: 27%

I'm sorry, what with the imminent demise of Western Civilisation, I'm a tad pushed to commit myself one way or the other on this: 11%

Once again you prove me wrong.

Any surprise omissions?

Well, yes, as usual. Given the huge publicity, I really expected both Will Young and Gareth Gates to be making an appearance in the list. Will got the closer of the two, "You And I" only narrowly missing out at number 54. Gareth only just got within the top 100, "Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake)" squeaking in at number 99. Darius got the last laugh in our chart it seems. The return of Oasis almost got them back in the Top 50, but Enrique Iglesias nudged them out and "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" ended up number 51. Then again, "Little By Little" wasn't too far behind at 65, so split voting did them no favours. And what about last years winner? 12 months on and Kylie is clearly last years news - "Love At First Sight" only making number 59. As for indie, well, 2 big names this year didn't get in. The Flaming Lips may have had one of the albums of the year but "Do You Realise?" only hit number 89. And as for The Vines - NME's number 2 album of the year - you have to go beyond halfway down the chart to get to "Outtathaway" at number 129. Shorely shome mishtake?

Still, at least the quality control appears to be intact. There were 33 songs on our list that no-one cared for. One of those was The Cheeky Girls "Touch My Bum" - ah well, we did give you the option, thank heavens no-one had the gall to go through with it.

The totally ficticious song

After the glaringly obvious entry last year, we managed to bang our heads together long enough for someone to come up with a band and song that was double-entendre free. And this time, it fitted in like a needle in a haystack. So, here's the list of the ones that were picked:

You can probably guess which one was cobblers from that. Suffice to say that for the second time in 3 years, the Mull Historical Society gets a mention. They have a new single out this year. There is a twist though. Whilst there shouldn't be any ineligable songs in the Top 50 this year, we did manage to inadvertantly make a song up that we thought existed. And although we spotted it and removed it off the shortlist pretty sharpish, it wasn't fast enough, as someone managed to correctly vote for it as the made-up song. Yes, The Hives "Because I Wanna" is generally known to the rest of the world as "Hate To Say I Told You So". 'Cept for me it seems. I now stand corrected.

And the songs in the banner?

Well, that solves it then. And no, those were not my top 10.

End.

That's it. I'm off to soak my fingers in a large bowl of slightly lemony water. Thanks to one and all for participating. I'll be back later this year to try and break the voting ton!

See yer!
